Sport Leicht gets rear-wheel steering and tilting forward touchscreen.
The Mercedes SL is one of the most popular nameplates. It has been around for almost 70 years. It is finally here, the R232-generation model. This represents a significant departure from its older predecessor. Practically everything has changed. The new Sport Leicht is rethinking the roadster’s formula in 2022. From the platform and design to technology and the posh 2+2 interior.
The new SL will replace the GT Roadster and is therefore no longer a Benz-branded vehicle. It will only be available as an AMG. The new styling is a continuation of the three-pointed star’s latest design language. It features a sharper exterior with the Panamericana grille and vertical slats, flanked with angular headlights that are similar to the CLS.
The slim side profile has pop-out electronic doors handles, just like the latest S Class. Engineers have reduced the weight by dropping 46 pounds (21 kg) from the metal roof to a three-layer fabric top. The heated rear window is made of glass. It can be folded down or raised in just 15 seconds, at speeds up to 31 mph (50 km/h). The roof’s weight has been reduced, which should result in better handling.
The high-performance AMG model is characterized by quad exhausts and a diffuser at the rear. The large taillights give the derriere a powerful look. The active rear spoiler, which is seamlessly integrated into the tailgate, has no less than six settings. Mercedes will offer the new SL with an Aerodynamic Package that includes beefier bumpers and active aero in front.
The leather-lined interior, which seats four, was revealed in July. It features the MBUX infotainment systems, including a large, portrait-oriented display. The touchscreen measures 11.9 inches and tilts forward at an angle of 12deg to 32deg for easy use. It is also joined by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, as well as a head up display with augmented real-ity tech.
The new Mercedes SL comes standard with the Airscarf neck heating system. It has vents built into the front headsrests, as you would expect from a Mercedes convertible. The AMG Performance steering wheel will be available, along with the option of the electrically adjustable AMG sports chairs or the optional AMG Performance seat.
The SL 55 and SL 63 versions of the revamped SL will now be available in the United States. Both models feature a twin-turbo 4.0 liter V8 engines. Base model has 469 horsepower (350 Kilowatts) as well as 516 pound-feet (706 Newton-meters). The hotter variant produces a massive 577 HP (430 kW) while the hotter version delivers 590 lb/ft (890 Nm).
The SL’s all-wheel drive is now available for the first time. This includes the 4Matic+ setup with variable tonnage distribution and an electromechanically controlled clutch that links the rear axle permanently driven with the front wheels. A nine-speed automatic transmission with launch control functions channels the engine’s output to the road.
The electronically controlled, limited-slip differential at rear is an option on the SL 55 and standard equipment on the SL 63. It increases traction and stability for the BMW 8 Series Convertible rival in high-speed cornering. Rear-wheel steering is also available to improve handling and reduce turning circle.
Mercedes-AMG won’t discuss pricing or availability at this time, but we expect the new SL to be available for the model year 2022.
