Because the GTS isn’t hardcore enough…
Guess who is back? If these spy photos are to be believed, the BMW M4 GTS will soon return. The 700-car limit on the track-focused is unlikely to be extended. However, it will likely get a second part. It looks like the hardcore coupe will receive some major upgrades.
BMW has taken the aero package to a higher level by adding a prominent front splitter and canards to this prototype. Side skirts are also beefier and there is a revised rear diffuser. The test vehicle also has vented frontfenders that have large air outlets behind its front wheels. It looks like something is missing from the car’s body.
We are not surprised that the model will be more powerful than the M4 GTS, which was a special edition that introduced BMW’s water injector system. This will return in 2019. For those who don’t know, the regular M4 GTS had 500 horsepower (368kilowatts), 442 pound-feet (642 Newton-meters), of torque, and weighed in at 1,510 kg (3,329 lbs). To be eligible for the CLS badge, the new model would need to be lighter than the GTS in order to live up the “Coupe, Sport, Lightweight”.
The BMW M4 will be faster than the M4 GTS’s 3.8 seconds, assuming it has more power in a smaller package. Although the M4 GTS had an electronically controlled top speed of 189.5mph (305 kmh), it does not necessarily mean that a CSL could beat that.
Although we may soon see the M4 more focused, it remains a mystery.
