BMW Welt has the official one-off truck on display.

Mercedes made a risky bet with the X class , a Nissan Navara-based . Rumours suggest that the German luxury ute will soon be discontinued because of low demand. BMW insists that a high-end truck will not be on their agenda. However, the company has produced several unique pickups over the years.

The X7 Pickup, a follow-up to E30 and E92M3 pickups from yesteryear is as real and authentic as they come. You can now see it in all its double cab glory at BMW Welt in Bavaria close to the company’s headquarters. The utilitarian vehicle, which is based on the largest SUV of the company, is shown with an F 850GS bike on its teakwood floor inspired by yachts. The X7 truck was developed by a dozen trainees over ten months. It is 10 cm (3.9 inches) longer that the SUV it is based on, while losing 200 kg (441 pounds) through the extended use of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). The bed can hold items up to 140 cm (55.1 inches), or 200 cm (78.7 inch) when the tailgate is in place.

It began life as an X7xDrive40i, before being transformed into a pickup in the fancy BMW Individual colour known as Tanzanite Blue Metallic. It features a height-adjustable suspension with two levels that make it easier to load and unload cargo. The cabin is spacious enough to accommodate five people and offers the same comfort you would expect from an SUV-based vehicle.

BMW and Audi say no truck. Hyundai and Kia however, are affirming their support. A Santa Cruz, an Alabama-built vehicle, will go into production in 2021. A Kia pickup will launch in 2022 or 2023. It would be foolish to ignore electric offerings in this market, like Rivian’s R1T and Tesla’s Cybertruck.
