After the first seven grand prix, the Briton is now the seventh winner. He also leads Fernando Alonso, the former champion.
Hamilton won using a two-stop strategy and had to pass Sebastian Vettel (one-stopper) and Alonso in just a few laps.
McLaren was still wondering if McLaren had committed another mistake.
“Are they sure that they (Vettel & Alonso) don’t want to be a one-stop shop?” Hamilton asked his engineer over the radio.
“We’re certain, Lewis,” was the reply.
McLaren was ultimately wrong about Red Bull’s plans and Ferrari’s, but the two-stop proved to be superior.
“It was a huge mistake by Ferrari to not stop more than once. A big mistake,” said Jaime Alguersuari on British radio.
However, Romain Grosjean of Lotus and Sergio Perez from Sauber made their one-stoppers work and easily passed Alonso – beating Vettel in the final stages to secure the podium.
