Lamborghini Teases LMDh hybrid race car for 2024

Lambo will be competing against Toyota, Peugeot and Porsche.

Lamborghini’s new LMDh prototype racing car, currently in development, will soon be entering the top level of sports car racers. The supercar manufacturer Sant’Agata Bolognese teases the new LMDh prototype by sharing a preview image and an official statement that announces Lambo’s racing program.

LMDh is Le Mans Dayton Hybrid. It’s the name of the new motorsport category that will debut in 2023. Automakers will now have the opportunity to participate in the FIA World Endurance Championship as well as the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship. Companies like BMW, Toyota and Peugeot have already announced their participation. The program will be available for Lamborghini. It will complement Squadra Corse’s GT platform (Super Trofeo, GT3, and GT3), which will continue to form the core of the automaker’s customer motorsport program.

Stephan Winkelmann (Chief Executive Officer at Lamborghini), comments that this step into the top echelon in sports car racing is an important milestone. “We will be comparing ourselves with the best on the most challenging proving grounds. This will allow our motorsports program to be more visible, and it will also give us the opportunity to test future technologies. Our LMDh prototypes will be our most advanced open laboratory on four-wheels.

The prototype for the LMDh is still in its early stages of development. There’s very little information. Only a teaser image has been released. It shows the machine in a sketch with a front fascia, which reminds us of Sian’s supercar. Given the fact that both Toyota and Peugeot will use a hybrid V6 engine, it will be interesting to see which powertrain the Lamborghini race car uses. Porsche will keep its V8. Lambo expects to unveil the LMDh prototype racecar in 2024. This will be in time for the FIA WEC, IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship.
