Mercedes-AMG Confirms Production of Its 805-HP Hybrid Engine V8

This setup was seen on the original AMG GT Concept. However, it will now be available as a road-going model.

The Mercedes-AMG GT 4 Door Coupe was first shown with an even more bizarre concept. It featured a biturbocharged hybrid 4.0-liter V8 producing an incredible 805 horsepower (605 kilowatts). Unfortunately, the engine was not transferred to the final production model. However, the good news is that we might see the same engine in an AMG vehicle.

Tobias Moers, Mercedes-AMG’s boss, confirmed that the hybrid V8 engine would be made into production in an interview with Digital Trends. Moers did not specify the type of vehicle that the hybrid V8 engine would be used in, but he said that engineers are working on it.

Moers said, “Maybe you recall the GT concept from Geneva last years.” It had a V8 engine at the front and an electrical motor at the rear. All of it is currently in development. It will be in production within a day.

AMG will likely develop its own battery pack to power the engine and use carbon fiber extensively for body construction. It won’t sound the same as the Toyota Prius, but Moers promises that it will have the same loud exhaust note as the non-hybrid version.

“If you can run [12 miles] in an electric mode, then it might be okay to have your freedom. It’s still quiet. Moers said that we aren’t done. We do lots of research with musicians, companies, and gaming people to discover the best sound for an electric-driven AMG. We are still on the journey, but we are just gathering a lot more input.

A few technologies from Project One, such as AMG’s electric turbo, will also be included in the new turbocharged hybrid engine V8. The setup has been seen on performance crossovers such as Audi SQ7, but it could be more common on AMG performance cars.
