VoA confirms a new compact crossover for 2021.

Volkswagen of America is expanding its “R” lineup to include the recently teased T–Roc R. This will be a cross-over alternative to the Golf R. Derrick Hatami (Vice President of Sales and Marketing at VoA) spoke to Motor Trend during the ongoing 2019 Chicago Auto Show.

MT asked Hatami if there would be an R version. He replied that there was no way to know. However, he said that VW plans to make the Jetta a serious sports car offering along the lines of the Golf GTI/R hot hatches. This could lead to some sales being lost. Hatami believes that performance Jetta versions would attract more buyers than the Golf GTI/R lovers, so VoA should spice up its sedan.

Although it’s too soon to discuss technical specifications of the Jetta R, especially as the Jetta R has not been given the green light yet, we can imagine an upgraded sedan with standard all-wheel-drive and 300 horsepower. This would be a major step up from the 228-hp front-wheel-drive Jetta GLI, which is a mix of the Golf GTI’s engine and the R’s brakes.

Hatami also announced that a new model will be coming to the U.S. in the next few years. The yet unnamed compact crossover will be available in 2021. It will sit underneath the Tiguan. This reveal confirms the report that VoA published in October 2018. It stated that VoA plans to introduce a new high-riding model, which will compete with the Toyota C-HR and Jeep Renegade. According to VW, the model will not be the American equivalent of T-Roc’s stylish crossover. Hatami stated that the new compact crossover will not be based on the Tiguan. It is expected to be made at either the Mexican plant or the U.S.
