Porsche GTS: What does it stand for?

Porsche continues to answer your most common questions.

Porsche continues its humorous video series on YouTube. This episode explains different abbreviations and terms. The German sports car manufacturer explained in the clips how got its name, where 911 was born, and what PDK stands for.

This video reveals that GTS refers to motorsport in the 1950s and 60s, when Gran Turismo racing was quite common. Porsche isn’t quite sure what GTS means – is Gran Turismo Sport or GranTourissmo? Although the “G” is clearly from Gran, the “T” comes from Turismo. But what does the “S” stand for?

Porsche claims that GTS models are its sporty purists. The video reminds us briefly that the 356 Carrera GT was the first Porsche model to be given the moniker in 1955. It was followed by the 904 Carrera GTS, in 1960. The name was also given the 928 GTS in the 1990s.

The 718 Boxster, and the 718 Cayman duo are the newest Stuttgart vehicles to be given the GTS designation. They both have the new 2.5-liter turbocharged engines, which replaces the 3.4-liter naturally aspirated motor. The reduced displacement does not affect power, which is up to 35 horsepower (26 kilowatts), for a total of 365 HP (272 kW).

The unit can be mated with a six-speed manual transmission to produce 309 pound-feet (420 Newton meters) of torque at 1,900 rpm. However, the PDK-fitted cars generate a slightly higher 317 lbft (430 Nm), from the same rpm. The PDK models can accelerate in 4.1 seconds and go 0-60 miles per hour (0-100 km/h). Maximum speed is 180 mph (290 km/h).
