A hybrid powertrain and all-wheel drive are still in the works.
Ford will be dropping almost every car in its lineup starting in 2019. Only the Focus Active, Focus and Mustang will be left. The Fusion will be the last sedan to go, and the Blue Oval will unveil a new version of its iconic pony car in the same year. It promises to be more than the current model.
Automotive News says the new Mustang will not arrive until 2021. Ford didn’t promise the new Mustang would arrive until 2021, which is a year later than originally planned. It will be riding on one of Ford’s five new modular platforms when it finally arrives. It will share components with the new Explorer, and the upcoming Lincoln Aviator.
Ford may offer an all-wheel drive Mustang, even though it will still be a rear-drive Mustang. It would be directly competing with cars such as the Dodge Challenger GT. Reports have also indicated that a hybrid model will be available shortly after the pure-gas-powered model in 2021.
In an interview with Automotive News, Chief Designer Darrell Behmer stated that Mustang will still be a strong and well-proportioned car. The modular architectures will give us flexibility, but it won’t bastardize Mustang.
The Mustang’s DNA will not be restricted to just one Mustang. Other models could take cues from pony cars. Ford already confirmed the Mach1 all-electric SUV, which is based on the Mustang. Even the Explorer seems to have a more aggressive appearance.
