We’ll probably see more of BMW EVs until the i4 arrives.
The BMW has experienced a rollercoaster ride. It has been confirmed that the Bavarian marque will not be able to produce the electric car until 2020. It was also announced that will not be the direct successor to i3.
Oliver Zipse (BMW’s new CEO), confirmed that the i3 would continue to exist and will receive more improvements, including a better battery pack.
It seems that BMW is determined to give the i3 a second chance – and we know when.
According to Electrive, a BMW spokesperson stated that the company “will continue to manufacture the i3 up to 2024”, as reported in a German newspaper Leipziger Volkszeitung. However, we don’t anticipate any direct successor.
We know that the i3 will receive improvements up to its final run in 2024. Although the details of the upgrades are not yet known, they will include an upgrade to the battery pack. It will have a greater capacity than the current 42.2 Kilowatt-hour.
BMW’s plans for an electrified future are also illuminated by the information regarding the i3’s extended life. According to reports, the i4/iNext will be launched in 2021. This means that the i3 will not only replace both BMW cars but also other BMW models.
It seems that BMW isn’t abandoning electrified mobility yet. Although the marque may not be able to compete with current EV leaders, it is encouraging to see them at least trying.
