Toyota’s 2012 GT 86 has been revealed after countless teasers as well as a barrage leaks.
The 86 is Toyota’s long-awaited successor model to the Celica, 2000 GT and Sports 800. It has been described as a “driver focused sports car” that captures “fundamental joys in motoring.”
The coupe is low-slung and intimidating, borrowing styling cues form the FL-86 or FL-86 II concepts. Highlights include a “scorpion”, a grille and LED-infused headlights. Clear taillights are found at the back with a spoiler at the rear, an aggressive diffuser, and dual exhaust systems.
The interior features a three-spoke steering column, aluminum pedals, and carbon-effect trim. The model also features a black roofliner, red contrast stitching, and aviation-inspired rocker switch.
The Subaru 2.0-liter boxer engine produces 200 PS (147kW/197 hp) as well as 205 Nm (151lb-ft). Toyota has not yet released performance specs, but they claim the car will be “engaging”, regardless of whether the engine is connected with a six speed manual or automatic.
The 86 features a MacPherson Strut / Double Wishbone suspension, a limited slip differential, and a 53 to 47 weight distribution. The 86 also features ventilated disc brakes as well as a tuned stability control system.
