Jokes, Fights, and Awesome Cars
This is beginning to look really good.
Hobbs & Shaw seems like it will be a summer blockbuster. In February, the first trailer for the Fast & Furious spinoff was released. We struggled to make a connection between the film and the long-running car-crazy franchise. The title characters Luke Hobbs (played in the Fast universe) and Deckard Shaw, (played to by Jason Statham), were indeed created, but the movie’s premise, which sees the protagonist chasing down a superhuman villain (played to death by IdrisElba), felt more like something out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The film’s second trailer has just been released. It shows the film in a new light. We are shown that cool cars may play a bigger role in this action movie. Our heroes are seen chasing bad guys in a McLaren. Statham is seen blasting out from a skyscraper Fast7 style in a special-forces-style SUV. There’s also a secret garage with a row McLarens (could this be McLaren sponsorship?). There are many motorcycles and custom-built machines. One of them appears to be a Peterbilt semi truck, with a heavy Baja outfit more appropriate for a Mad Max experience. This film is insane.
The trailer is nearly four minutes long and changes the way we see the film. Apart from the fact that we see more cars, there seems to be a major twist which sends the heroes running. Hobbs tells them they must go “home” to get off the grid. This apparently refers to Hobbs’ family and home. Hobbs & Shaw suddenly becomes Luke Hobbs’ origin story. This apparently includes a great fondness for building insane custom cars in a huge Hobbs family garage. It’s amazing, isn’t it? This film may have an Fast & Furious lineage.
One thing is certain: the action looks intense. We love the quirky-couple humor between the main characters. We are eagerly waiting for the next trailer and will most likely be at the theater in the latter part of the summer.
