It’s almost like driving the sci fi future is the story from the 1980s.
Vector Motors isn’t a household name today. The brand is responsible for many truly remarkable vehicles, primarily from the 1980s to the mid-1990s. This video shows you what it is like to drive the wild Vector W8.
Vector: Get up to speed
The GM-derived, midmounted 6.0-liter twin-turbo aluminum V8 produces 625 horsepower (466 kilowatts). It is connected to the rear wheels by a three-speed auto. According to the specs, the V8 could reach 60 miles an hour (96 km per hour) in 4.2 seconds. This was lightning fast by 1990 standards.
The W8 still wears a striking style that is eye-catching today. (See more in the gallery). The body is flat and has no curves. Each panel is instead an angular piece that together creates one of the most angular cars ever seen.
Even more crazy is the interior. The dashboard features a CRT screen that displays information in amber. The buttons to the left of your driver seat can be used to change views. These include powertrain details, speedometer and whether or not the doors are open. The cabin looks more like an airplane than a car because of the many switches.
The W8 isn’t a loud engine, despite its attention-grabbing design. The engine note is gritty, to use the language of the vehicle’s age. The V8 rumble is distinctive, but the engine note is not very pleasant to the ear.
Despite the low-pitched sound, it’s still a great experience to open the scissor doors and get behind the wheel. A W8 was produced in 17 units by customer cars between 1990 and 1993. Driving one is an even more special experience.
