BMW 3 Series, BMW X3, and X4 Mild hybrids confirmed for 2020 launch

BMW will reduce its emissions by electrifying models to comply with stricter regulations.

In addition to announcing new ways that its cars will be greener, BMW also released a press release. It focuses on the Efficient Dynamics technology’s ability to reduce fuel consumption and emissions since 2007. The mild hybrid system was first introduced on the 5 Series sedan/wagon in the 520d guise, with rear- and all wheel drive. It will now trickle down to 3 Series (320d / 320d xDrive and M340d xDrive sedans and wagons, as well as the X3 or X4 crossovers in xDrive20d specification this Spring.

These three will be following the 520d as well as the X5 or X6 in xDrive40d specifications. This is because the large SUVs received the 48V tech earlier in the year. All of these efforts are made to reduce emissions in order to comply with more stringent European Union regulations. BMW is on the right path, having managed to reduce CO 2 emissions by over 40 percent in the past 13 years. It is also confident that it will meet the EU’s future targets.

According to the company, it will reduce emissions by 20% this year, compared to 2019, thanks to a variety of plug-in hybrids and EVs as well as these mild-hybrid vehicles.

Efficient Dynamics goes beyond optimizing engines for efficiency. It also involves aerodynamic efficiency. BMW reminds us that the 3 Series Sedan has a lowest drag coefficient of 0.23 Cd due to its slim shape and third-generation active air flap control system.

The fully electric iX3 will be available late in the year. It will come with a new set of aerowheels that reduce drag by 5 percent compared to the X3 standard wheels and cut weight by 15% over its previous aero-optimized rims.
