2019 Audi A1 Almost Unmasked

The upcoming five-door hatchback is our best yet.

The latest spy photos of the 2019 Audi A1 Sportback show almost nothing. As the A1 is put through final testing in Europe, it’s uncamouflaged features, sportsy body kit and modern lighting graphics become evident.

had already seen the outline of the new A1 but it is only now that we are able to see the sharp creases on its bodysides. The fascia’s frontal features include a deep lower grille opening, which gives it a sporty look. Meanwhile, the roof spoiler and polygonal taillights give it a modern, taut appearance.

The MQB modular platform is used by a number of Volkswagen Group cars including the Audi A3 (and the Volkswagen Golf), and the next Audi A1. These are five-door hatchbacks. Audi calls it the A1 Sportback. However, we have heard that the new model won’t be available in a three door body.

Although it’s too early to determine the exact powertrains, our sources indicate that a turbocharged turbocharged 1.0-liter turbo-three will be the lowest engine, with turbocharged 1.5- and 2.0 liter four-cylinder turbo engines available in different states of tune. All-wheel drive will become an option on the S1’s racy model. Rumours are that these engines may have mild-hybrid technology. Audi already has mild-hybrid tech in its new HTML6, HTML7 and engines.

Although we have not yet seen the interior, it is safe to assume that Audi will equip the new A1’s with its Virtual Cockpit instrumentation, as well all manner of active safety technology.

We reported in January that Audi intends to introduce the A1 Sportback officially this year. It should be available in the next few months. Audi is preparing a massive product launch with a new model every three weeks.
