It will be available for production “at the beginning of 2022.”
BMW is finishing the M2 and yesterday saw a prototype being raced by the M4 CSL. The official announcement by the Bavarian automaker about the performance coupe comes today along with four teaser photos. However, the most intriguing part is that the 2023M2 will be made in Mexico.
The second generation M2 will only be made available to the world at BMW’s San Luis Potosi facility. It is expected to arrive on the production lines by the end of 2022, making it the third BMW product ever to be made in the same factory. Since 2019, the 3 Series has been produced on the same production line as the 2 Series Coupe. BMW will hire 800 additional employees to support the M2 and create a second shift.
The 50th anniversary celebrations for BMW M will be celebrated with the production of the M2. Harald Gottsche (President and CEO of BMW’s San Luis Potosi facility), comments, “We are thrilled to be part in the celebrations of the 50th Anniversary of M. Now that our Mexican plant is going to build M vehicles for all of the world,”

The M2 is a new generation model that could be the best pure driver’s performance vehicle. It will only be available with rear-wheel drive, with the possibility of a 6-speed manual gearbox. Under the hood, a modified version of M4’s 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine will likely be found. It is expected to produce around 450 horsepower in Competition form. There are rumors circulating on the internet that a more powerful version of the M4’s 3.0-liter inline-six turbocharged engine will be released later in the model’s lifespan.
We are unable to give an exact launch date for the M2. The coupe will be available in the United States starting in 2023.
