BMW 7-Speed M2-Double Clutch Transmission BMW is the first automaker to offer a seven speed Double Clutch Gearbox, specifically designed and engineered for V8 engines capable of speeds up to 9,000 RPM. Since 1996, BMW M GmbH has experimented with sequential gearboxes in volume production. Three generations of BMW’s SMG (Sequential M Gearbox), which are electro hydraulically controlled and without a clutch pedal, have been displaced by the M-DCT (M Double Clutch Transmission). The double-clutch transmission was first introduced on the VW Golf R32 in 2002. The system offers many advantages, including faster shifts, consistent power flow between shifts, and lower fuel consumption. The transmission was limited in power and torque because of the comfort it required for everyday use. But that is now changing. BMW, in collaboration with Getrag is the first car manufacturer to offer a seven speed Double Clutch Gearbox. It was specifically designed and engineered for V8 engines capable of speeds up to 9,000 RPM. The M double-clutch transmission features 11 Drivelogic driving programs, a new sports shift lever, and launch control. It is featured in the BMW M3 Coupe and Convertible with 420hp 4.0 liter V8. Porsche took a double-clutch 997 to Nurburgring. It was able to cut 8 seconds off the time of a manual equipped model. It is only a matter time before BMW proves what it can do.
