BMW Trolls Mercedes on Halloween, but It Backfires
Mercedes is a funny person.

Be careful not to make a joke about a major competitor and risk a comeback that is so intense that you can’t even have another one. After a funny exchange with Daimler colleagues, BMW’s social media team now understands how it feels.

BMW began things by tweeting at 10:55 AM ET, which poked fun at Mercedes.

Daimler AG responded at 11:39 am and didn’t even have to use an image to communicate its message.

This simple statement ended all of the problems. The situation was summarized succinctly by a flood of humorous responses.

Daimler’s joke is that BMW’s designers are creating massive versions of its trademark kidney grille layout to make new models. The X7 crossover was the first to get this done, but it wasn’t as egregious due to its large size. The 7 Series received a larger grille and the element did not fit as well in the sedan. These products were revealed in the Concept 4, and recently leaked photos of the next-gen 4 series.

Future BMWs could have big grilles

Drawings and critics mock BMW’s massive grille openings. This tweet, however, is the first time that another automaker has taken a swipe at the polarizing appearance.

Adrian van Hooydonk, BMW’s design chief, has said that the company is in its best interests to continue evolving the styling to ensure customers aren’t bored with their products. The new grille is a perfect example of the get direction’s emphasis on bold shapes.
