General Motors China has received the wraps for the next GL8 multipurpose vehicle, which will be available locally in the coming year.
The company’s latest design language gives the MPV a more elegant exterior. The predecessor’s generous wheelbase of 121.5 inches (3.088 mm) remains intact. This figure, according to Buick, is the best in its class. The wheelbase is unchanged, but the new model has shorter front- and rear overhangs. This means that the overall length of the vehicle has been shortened a bit compared with the GL8 which spans at 204.7 inches (5.2 meters).
Although Buick has not released many details about the GL8, it did mention that it can accommodate up to seven people, just like the model before. The MPV will also benefit from new engines and new technologies inside a luxurious cabin. Buick will sell the people car in two trim levels, the entry-level ES as well as the flagship Avenir. This is similar to the concept that was unveiled at the start of last year. After the introduction of the “Avenir”, sub-brand, fully-loaded Buicks will now be known as this.
According to reports from China, the third-gen model will use the same underpinnings and suspension as the current car. However, it will have an independent rear suspension to increase comfort. A turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine producing 253 horsepower (189 kW) will power the model.
The new GL8 will be available in China before the end of the year. It will also likely to be on display at the Guangzhou Auto Show in November. The GL8 has been a key product for GM China, where Buick is currently third in passenger vehicle sales.
The Shanghai-GM joint venture will produce the new MPV locally.
