Mini Hints at Mid-Engined Sports Car

Mini Hints at Mid-Engined Sports Car

Mini’s new halo car is not far-fetched.

The BMW Group had a successful year last year, with global sales increasing by a few percentage points to at least 2.5 million units. While Mini saw a slight dip in global sales, BMW’s division saw a 32% rise in sales to at most 135,000 units worldwide. Mini recognizes that there are more opportunities for high-performance cars, even more expensive ones, in the global market. Mini has the GP hot-hatchback but they don’t dismiss the possibility of something more powerful, something that can take on the Alpine.

The motoring.com team had the opportunity to speak with Mini’s head for communications Andreas Lampka during this week’s MINI Electric launch in Miami. Mini’s current lineup includes front-wheel drive and front engined models. Some models have all-wheel drive. However, there is a chance that a mid-engined Mini model will soon be approved. “But if our engineers have more time and resources, they will come up with a middle-engine car.” Oh, and considering the direction Mini is heading, there’s a good chance it won’t have a combustion engine. Lampka stated that something similar to the MiniSuperleggera was possible.

BMW Group Offers The EV Tech and RWD Chassis

Let’s see what the brand does. It is an exciting time for Mini. He said that while we believe we have made the right decisions, the other side of the coin doesn’t know what the next challenge will be for Mini. The Mini Superleggera, a lightweight two-seater built in partnership with Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera, was first revealed in Itlay in 2014. The idea was to power it with an electric motor. However, higher-ups put a halt to the project at the time.
