Porsche could make a Panamera 2-door?

If Porsche is well-informed about its target demographic, it could soon be possible to build a coupe or convertible based on Panamera.

The mid-engined Porsche 911 is the most exciting news from Zuffenhausen. However, “911” doesn’t always provide emergency relief so Porsche must rely on its bread and cheese models to fund the development of newer, more exciting products. The engineers in Germany may already have a solution.

What about a convertible and coupe based on the Panamera?

Klaus Zellmer, newly appointed Porsche North America CEO, says that the Panamera-based twins, which are based on the Panamera, are the models Americans most desire, even more so than the sport-utility cars. They are comparable to the BMW 6 Series permutations, rather than dedicated sports cars such as the 911 Carrera or 718 Boxster/Cayman. Zellmer didn’t give any details on the platform or the timing of their debut, but it is possible that they would be available shortly after the launch the next-generation Panamera. This is still a long way off. Given the success of the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, we were expecting Zellmer to suggest that two-door versions of the Macan or Cayenne be offered.

Zellmer has been with Porsche for over 20 years and has seen the huge success of the Panamera and Cayenne. He also noted that Porsche is keen to ensure the U.S. remains a top market.
