Red Bull hydraulic systems and gearboxes will be used by Lotus starting in the 2011 season, announced the Malaysian-backed team on Tuesday morning. The team, which will be known as Team Lotus next season is expected to announce in the near future an agreement to use Renault’s customer engine in 2011. The news will mean Lotus and Red Bull will use the same engine/gearbox/hydraulics package in formula one, which according to team boss Tony Fernandes is a “real statement of our intention”. According to a media release, the agreement is effective for 2011 and beyond. Lotus expressed concerns with the Xtrac hydraulics and gearbox during its debut season and has since terminated its engine contract. Mike Gascoyne, technical boss, stated that the deal provides a platform for design and aero teams to collaborate. Red Bull is providing a gearbox for the first time to a customer team. Christian Horner, Red Bull’s team boss, stated that Red Bull Technology was chosen as a supplier for another team despite having a short history.
