Is there anything that the Unimog cannot do?
The Mercedes Unimog is an off-roader that can tackle any obstacle. Matt Watson rode in the Unimog at Mercedes’ off-road testing facility, to test its capabilities. The Unimog is capable of navigating even when the driver attempts to fix it.
Today’s video shows how the Unimog was used to climb Mount Ojos de Salado in Chile. It reached a height of 6,694m (21,962 feet) above sea level. This record-breaking climb was achieved at the highest altitude by a four-wheeled vehicle. Four emergency radios were installed at campsites high up by climbers.
Massive winches and a front bumper system were used to prepare the Unimogs for their expedition. This unique system ensured that the Unimogs did not roll backwards on steeper sections of the trail.
A G-Wagon is the most common Mercedes offroader, but it’s not a road vehicle. A Unimog, which is a supercar that is only available on the road, is the highest level of Mercedes’ off-road offerings. The Unimog is a massive truck that can handle any terrain. It comes in countless configurations to suit a variety of applications. Unimog is both a rugged piece of equipment and an off-road toy.
These record-breaking machines can still be seen today, tackling some of the most challenging terrain at Mercedes offroad testing center. It’s a rare opportunity to ride in one the most capable off-road vehicles ever made and see it overcome obstacles.
