This Stage 1 Kit is available in the U.S. and suggests that there are more to come…
British tuning company BBR has been installing turbo upgrades to Mazda MX-5s since 1990. The latest Mk4 MX-5 2.0 liter has been launched by BBR. Even the introductory “Stage 1 upgrade” delivers 248 horsepower (185kilowatts) as well as 236 lbft (320 Nm).
The BBR MX-5 Turbo has a top speed at 155 mph (250 km/h) and a 0-60mph (0-96 km/h) time of just 5.0 seconds. Fully-fitted, it costs less than PS6,000. And if you are worried about damaging your shiny , don’t be: BBR guarantees factory quality, compliance with MOT emissions, and no new engine behavior. You can even reverse the process if you want to bring your car back to its original state.
Skyactiv-G’s boosted engine produces peak power at 7,150 rpm. Peak torque is at 3,250 RPM. More than 200 lb-ft (271 Nm) are available in a range of 2,750-6,500rpm. This powerful 0-60 mph acceleration is more than 2 seconds faster than the benchmark sprint. The 155 mph top speed is electronically limited at 2,750-6,500 rpm.
It is also available in the U.S. through Flyin’ Miata distributor. The project took three years to develop. It is a twin-scroll turbo, not a supercharger. Neil Mckay, BBR, stated that it was clear that a supercharger with its high parasitic losses would be detrimental to the Mazda Skyactiv G engine’s super-efficient ethos. A supercharger would require significant power boosts to achieve substantial power gains, which would be uncompatible with the engine’s high compression ratio.
Mazda’s complex 4-2-1 exhaust manifold meant that single-scroll turbos weren’t an option. BBR decided to go with a twin-scroll unit. It is compatible with the original Skyactiv G layout and knock-resistant technology. This can be seen by the impressive power figures at very low boost pressures,
You like the sound of the Stage 1 kit, but you also enjoy getting dirty. BBR offers a MX-5 Turbo DIY Kit, which includes all hardware and software. Both kits come with a warranty package of up to 3 years.
