VW ID.3 and ID.4 – First OTA Updates

The ID.3 will receive the software updates first.

Volkswagen just released its first major wireless software upgrade for its ID range electric vehicles. The ID.3 update will be the first to bring functionality and other improvements. It will begin later in the month. All upcoming ID models, including the ID.4 or ID.4 GTX, will be available gradually.

This first software update over-the-air for the ID range will improve many aspects including lighting functionality, main beam control, and optimized infotainment system operation. Volkswagen can update up 35 control units through OTA updates thanks to its MEB platform and new, smarter electronics architecture.

Thomas Ulbrich, member of VW’s Board of Management for Development, says that cars that have the most up-to-date software and provide a great digital customer experience are crucial for Volkswagen’s future success. “We created the agile project unit ID. Digital was created to allow us to update the software in our car continuously. We can quickly collect customer feedback and respond to customer needs.

Volkswagen will generally update the software for the ID family every 12 weeks. These updates will not only make adjustments to vehicle systems, but also include improvements based upon customer feedback.

Volkswagen claims that it is the “first and only high volume manufacturer to offer this innovative technology to its customers on a wide basis.” However, it is worth mentioning that Ford Porsche and other manufacturers already offer OTA updates for several products on their market. It is likely that it will not take long before every manufacturer of automobiles offers wireless software updates, particularly for electric vehicles.
