The crossover was not a Top Safety Pick+ because of its marginal headlights.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has awarded the 2017 Jeep Compass a Top Safety Pick award. Even though the optional headlights received a Marginal score and the base lights received an Poor rating, the crossover was not eligible for the IIHS+ designation.
In all crash tests, the 2017 Compass received the required Good rating from the IIHS. The IIHS determined that there was a low risk of serious injuries in the small-overlap front crash evaluation. Both the front and side airbags were able to control the head movement during the collision. At the lower hinge pillar, the maximum entry into the cabin was 3.15 inches (8 cm).
The optional Advanced Safety and Lighting Group package adds front collision prevention to the Compass, earning it a Superior rating. It was capable of avoiding crashes at speeds between 12 and 25 mph (19 and 40 km/h).
Standard halogen lights from Compass received a poor rating due to IIHS’ testing deeming both the high and low beams “inadequate” during the cornering evaluations. Optional Advanced Safety and Lighting Group packages add HID projectors with high beams and automatic high beams. These low beams scored “inadequate”, on both the left and right sides in a straight line. The HID high beams failed to perform in straight lines and sharp curves to their left and right.
Although the Compass child seat anchors were not included in the Top Safety Pick criteria IIHS rated them as poor. According to the agency, the buckles were difficult to attach and too difficult to locate in the child’s seat.
