It is faster than the C7 Stingray and nearly beats the Z06.
The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette is a fast-moving new car reveal. The standard operating procedure for a new car reveal is to first show the car and then reveal more information, such as price and performance over the next few months. We are just a month away from the C8’s big day at California. The only important piece of information that is still available is the quarter-mile acceleration speed. This mystery is now solved, although it’s not officially.
Today marks the official start of the big Corvettes At Carlisle event in Carlisle (Pennsylvania). The four-day event will see upwards of 5,000 cars. There are also GM personnel present with C8 books. BJ67, a member of Corvetteforum.com, snapped some photos of an alleged booklet that was written by an engineer. It listed, among other things a quarter-mile speed of 11.3 seconds. It also listed a quarter-mile speed at 121 mph. However, it is unclear if these figures were for cars equipped with Z51 performance packages.
Although the numbers are not confirmed, the information seems to be correct. We’ve seen similar engineering brochures from other automakers in the past. The C8 is almost a full second faster than the C7 Stingray and is just a little bit faster at the track. The Z06 is the current HTML8 . The new C8 (with Z51 package), matches it at 60 mph, but loses the drag racing by a few tenths. The math is simple: the C8’s more powerful engine and faster dual-clutch transmission allow it to launch harder and shift faster. The C7 Z06, which is 650 horsepower, pulls ahead to the end for a substantial lead.
The C8 Z06 will change that. According to recent reports, it will be powered by a Blackwing-based DOHC twin turbo V8 that produces upwards of 800 horsepower. However, it is possible that the car could become the next ZR1. The Z06 could have a lower output than the current model. We’ll have to wait to see if it is faster.
