Even small changes can make a big difference.

Sedans aren’t getting much love from consumers, particularly those of the compact size. Today’s car buyers prefer SUVs and crossovers of all sizes. But that doesn’t mean that automakers have abandoned every sedan option on the side that leads to financial success. Hyundai still makes Accent and will get a bunch of upgrades for 2020.

The 2020 Accent features Hyundai’s Smartstream four-cylinder engine of 1.6-liters. It has continuously variable valve timing, dual port injection and a new thermal management system. The engine generates 120 horsepower (89 Kilowatts) as well as 113 pound-feet (1153 Newton-meters).

Hyundai’s Smartstream Intelligent Variable Transmission, the company’s in-house continuously variable transmission, is also new. Hyundai’s IVT is not like a standard CVT. Hyundai chose a chain belt instead of the more standard push belt. This is a first for compact cars. The six-speed automatic will be replaced by the chain belt, while the six speed manual will remain the standard gearbox.

The 2020 Accent’s fuel economy is improved by the new engine and gearbox. The Accent’s combined mpg rating with the six-eyed manual increases by one. The IVT makes the biggest gains. It adds four mpg to the combined rating of 36 mpg, compared to 32 for the 2019 model without the updated engine and gearbox.

The 2020 Hyundai Accent’s pricing is still very affordable. The starting price for the entry-level SE trim is $16,125 with the manual gearbox. Adding the IVT to the SE trim brings the total to $17,225. All prices exclude the $930 destination fee. The highest-tier Limited trim starts at $20,000.

The 2020 Hyundai Accent isn’t going to give the compact a fresh look but the updated engine and gearbox should make it more appealing. The updated Hyundai will appeal to those looking for a low-cost car with good fuel economy and features. Although this update isn’t as popular as the new C8 Corvette, it’s an important one for the South Korean automaker.
