Ford Expedition should be on its guard.
The rear suspension setup is the only thing that makes the Ford Expedition different from the Chevrolet Tahoe. The SUVs are both family-friendly SUVs. However, the Expedition features a multilink suspension at its back while the Tahoe has a solid axle.
Car and Driver reports that the full-size SUV will have an independent rear suspension system, eliminating the live axle completely. This will allow the Tahoe to catch up with its biggest rival in terms of ride quality, third row/cargo volume, and overall performance.
This confirms our observation of the Tahoe’s spy photos last year in which the SUV was shown with a multi-link rear suspension underneath its heavily camouflaged body. The Tahoe will be able to compete with the Expedition once more, now that this information is known.
Large SUVs will greatly benefit from a multi-link rear suspension. This will improve handling, ride comfort and interior space. The new system will allow for smoother rides and less vibrations to the passengers.
The Tahoe will be sharing the T1 truck platform from GM with the new suspension system. The Expedition will not only be facing a new challenger in Tahoe, but also with the Yukon.
Car and Driver reported that GM will equip Tahoe with a 3.6-liter V6 and 5.3- and 6.2 liter V8 engines. There are also rumors of hybrid versions joining the lineup. Transmission options include eight- and ten-speed automatic gearboxes.
