The base model has 429 horsepower.

More pieces of the 2021 S-Class puzzle are becoming available as the September 2 world premiere approaches. Mercedes already showed the interior and talked about the new W223 changes. Our Motor trend colleagues have now learned directly from the three-pointed star all about the engine lineup available in the United States.

North America will see Mercedes launch an S500 with a turbocharged 3.0-liter Inline-Six engine that produces 429 horsepower. The mild-hybrid entry-level model will feature 21 electrified horsepower thanks to the EQ Boost setup. These output numbers may look familiar because electrified powertrains are available in several options.

“53” models. The combustion engine produces 384 pound-feet (521 Newton-meters of torque) while the Integrated Starter-Generator (ISG), bolted to M256’s crankshaft, is capable of producing a remarkable 184 lb-ft (249 Nm).

Next up is the beefier S580, which has a twin-turbo 4-liter V8 codenamed “M176”. It produces a healthy 496 horsepower and 20 hp via ISG. This setup will deliver 516 lb-ft (706 Nm) of torque. These two versions of the S Class will be available as standard with the 4Matic all-wheel-drive.

To denote the plug in hybrid version, the S580 will have an “e” after its name. It will replace the S500’s V8 with an electric motor that produces 362 horsepower. A traditional engine will be paired up with an electric motor producing 140 horsepower for nearly 500 horsepower and the same torque output as the S580’s larger V8.

The S580e can run on electricity alone for up to 60 miles (96 km) thanks to a 28-kWh lithium battery pack. Motor Trend explains that this would more than double the range the 2020 S560e. Don’t be alarmed if the battery takes up too much of the cargo space. Mercedes tried to place the rear axle lower than the body in order to accommodate the battery. This was to ensure practicality. The trunk will actually be larger than the W222.

AMG models will be available with 800 horsepower in a plug-in hybrid version. Although there will not be an AMG S65, the twin-turbo V12 6.0-liter will be still available in the Maybach S-Class. It will be compatible with an all-wheel-drive system.

Mercedes will sell the redesigned S-Class outside of the USA with a range of diesel engines. This includes a straight-six 3.0-liter engine with 282 horsepower and 443 lb-ft (690 Nm). This unit will be the base unit in Europe. China and other countries with high taxes on large displacement engines will get a four-pot. The CLS260 already comes with a 1.5-liter turbo-charged gasoline engine of 184 horsepower and 207 lbft (280 Nm). A four-banger G350 will get a 2.0-liter engine in China, with 299 horsepower and 295 lbft (400 Nm).

The new S-Class will also get a zero-emissions brother in the EQS, due to arrive in 2021. It features a sleek exterior design and an avant-garde interior. The S-Class electric vehicle will cover more than 435 miles (705 kilometers) in a single charge, matching the stunning concept that was unveiled almost a year ago at Frankfurt Motor Show.
