It’s very similar to Toyota having a Ford Ranger Raptor competitor in Europe.
Arctic Trucks is constantly improving the Toyota Hilux’s capabilities. Since years, they’ve been selling Hilux pickups upgraded. You might be familiar with the one that was featured in the golden age of Top Gear and became the first passenger vehicle across Antarctica.
Arctic Trucks is currently working on the latest Hilux model, which was launched in June 2013. The AT35 model, which is Toyota-backed, starts as a 2.8-liter double-cab model in the appropriately named InvincibleX trim level. After that it undergoes several modifications to improve its off-road capabilities. The ground clearance is increased by 65 millimeters (2.6 in) and the approach and departure angles go up by nine and three degrees, respectively.
After modifying the Hilux’s frame, inner arches and bodywork, these modifications were possible. Arctic Trucks fitted 17-inch wheels with BFGoodrich KO2 All Terrain tires of 35 inches to enhance the pickup’s ability to go anywhere.
The AT35 variant has more than meets your eye. It also features an upgraded Bilstein suspension with custom dampers and springs at the front and a revised anti roll bar. Arctic Trucks’ Hilux has a 40mm (1.6in) front suspension lift and 20mm (0.8in) rear suspension lift, respectively, compared to the standard Toyota model. For better torque delivery, the front and back differentials were modified.
A rear height bar and a receiver hitch make the Hilux AT35 stand out from the original Toyota model. Arctic Trucks includes 30th anniversary decals and a flare package for both the front and back wings. The extended side steps, as well as a certificate of authenticity round out the upgrades.
The standard-fit four-cylinder turbodiesel engine 2.8-liter produces 201 horsepower and a generous 500 Newton-meters (369-pound-feet of torque) at 1,600 rpm. Gazoo Racing has been hinting at a hot version to compete with the Ford Ranger Raptor. But we will believe it once we see it. Toyota’s New Zealand division developed its own rugged Hilux and has called it Mako.
The 2021 Hilux AT35 conversion is already available from Toyota dealers in the UK. It costs PS18.780 (about $25,700 at current exchange rates), plus the value-added tax and the donor truck.
