A four-door coupe based on a sedan will be available with ICE or EV powertrains.
Bavaria is the king of niche models, and the 4 Series Gran Coupe is proof of that. It’s a 3 Series Sedan that has been transformed into a 4 Series Coupe. The rear doors are removed, the roofline is coupe-like, and the liftgate is added. These spy shots show that the Audi A5 Sportback rival will be getting a new generation in 2021.
Our spy team got to see a production-ready 4 Series Gran Coupe on small wheels and winter tires. As the round exhaust tips indicate that we are not dealing with the M440i model, the test vehicle is a lower-spec version of the swoopy liftback. Side profile stickers that look like traditional door handles distract from the new flush handle design. They are not compatible with the 3 Series Sedan/ Touring, the 4Series Coupe, or the Convertible.
It’s easy to see the BMW branding on the front of this car. This includes the love/hate grille that opens and closes automatically depending on how much cooling is needed. Although images of the interior aren’t available, the cabin is likely to be almost identical to the 4 Series Coupe.
The 4 Series Gran Coupe lineup will feature the standard gasoline and diesel engines as well as an M Performance variant. The HTML440i will use a turbocharged 3.0-liter six cylinder engine with mild hybrid tech to provide a little bit of electric boost and reduce emissions. It will produce 382 horsepower (285kilowatts), and 500 Newton-meters (369 pounds-feet).
BMW released some teaser images of the i4, the 4 Series Gran Coupe, separately from the spy photos. It will inherit the design of the combustion-engined sibling, and will likely produce a hot M50 xDrive derivative to be the closest thing to an M-branded fully-electric 4 Series.
The i4 is an addition to the 4 Series line, but BMW has also launched a M3 touring. The two new additions will be covered by BMW sometime in the next year. This will allow them to offer more options. The wraps will also be removed from the Convertible in 2021.
