Chevy had to adjust to meet emission regulations.
Automakers are not finding it easier to comply with increasingly stringent emission regulations. Chevy had to update the Corvette C8’s LT2 engine for the 2022 model years. This made it cleaner than ever without sacrificing power, according Muscle Cars & Trucks. Tadge Juechter was interviewed by the publication and shared his thoughts on how Chevy modified its engine to comply with the new rules.
Juechter claims that the new mill has a revamped fuel injector system, which improves fuel “atomization,” and produces “fewer waste products,” helping to meet the model’s particulate emission figure. The engine’s naturally aspirated 6.2-liter motor was also updated. Chevy also re-calibrated the Corvette’s Active Fuel Management system, which controls the car’s stop/start function. This improves the environment without affecting performance.
The 2022 Corvette C8 will continue to produce 490 horsepower (365kilowatts), 465 poundfeet (630 Newton meters) of torque, or 495 HP (369kW) and 637 Nm respectively with the optional Performance Exhaust. The cost of tweaking an engine to increase its emissions is often a few horsepower or pound-feet. However, this is not the case for the updated C8. The Corvette will receive a few minor changes for the 2022 model-year. Other changes include 3 new official colors and a new low profile spoiler option.
It has not been an easy road to production for the C8. A report earlier this month stated that Chevy had cancelled the June allocation of C8 Corvettes because of ongoing part shortages. However, it is not the chip shortage that is affecting production. There have been several delays in production of the car in 2021. All this is happening while Corvette enthusiasts wait for Chevy’s higher performance trims like the Z06 which have been seen out testing on numerous occasions.
