Orange tow hooks are the best way to make your off-road vehicle ready.
For the 2018 model year, the current-generation Ford Expedition was introduced. It’s due for an update in this fast-evolving SUV segment. That update should be available later in the year as a 2022 model. Although we haven’t seen many prototypes, the ones that we did see suggested a minor upgrade to the front or rear. The latest images show that the Timberline version is still in production.
This is actually the best Expedition look so far. Timberline models have a different grille than the standard model. The updated headlights will look very similar to the F150. The Expedition’s appearance is very similar to the Ford Explorer Timberline. This means that it should have some off-road upgrades. It’s easy to see the front skid plate, but it is less visible than before. The revised lower fascia gives you more approach clearance.
The meaty Goodyear Wrangler tires with black wheels are a must. The Expedition’s higher ride height makes it feel more off-road. The orange tow hooks can be easily spotted if the adventure becomes a little too violent.
There are no plans to make any changes to the powertrain formula under the hood. The twin-turbocharged, 3.5-liter V6 engine is available with either 375 horsepower or 400 horsepower. It’s sent through a 10-speed auto and should continue to work. Ford will likely add the hybrid system to the F-150. The Timberline may also get a slight power boost to make it stand out from the Expedition.
Official debut may be near, considering the recent reveal of the Explorer Timberline and the thinnest camouflage on the Expedition prototype. We expect the 2022 model to be available in the fall or summer.
