Sad trombone: The Blue Oval says it won’t transport the midsize sedan from the Old Continent.
Quelle surprise! The new Ford Mondeo, which was unveiled in China yesterday, won’t make it to Europe. Europe has seen a decline in midsize sedan sales for many years. Our colleagues from Motor1.com Germany reached out to the Blue Oval’s local branch, and a spokesperson confirmed that the “Mondeo” nameplate will continue only in the People’s Republic.
The Euro-spec Mondeo will cease production at Valencia’s factory in March as originally announced almost a year ago. It’s also one of the most popular models in the segment, even though it has been around for over a decade. After 30 years, the moniker will be phased off in Europe as Ford replaced it with the Sierra back in 1992.
The archrival Volkswagen Passat sedan has been killed. Wolfsburg plans to only sell the next-generation model as a wagon, however. According to recent reports, Opel may also discontinue the Insignia and make the formula a hybrid of an SUV and minivan. Russelsheim’s midsize car could be based on the unusual theme of Citroen (another Stellantis brand) with its bizarrely shaped C5 X.
Skoda confirmed that it will offer the next generation Superb sedan to those who still desire a midsize sedan. It will technically be a liftback but you get the idea. Czech peeps keep the wagon going, while the Peugeot 508 will continue to be available in both body styles.2022 Ford Evos (CN)
Will Ford indirectly replace the Mondeo in Europe by something else? We are not able to predict the future, but we know that the Evos will continue to be a China-only product. The 2022 Mondeo’s crossover counterpart will likely lend its super-wide screen setup for the new sedan. Ford has not yet shown images of the Mondeo’s interior, but it is believed that the Evos will use the 1.1-meter (3.6-foot) displays.
