2022 Hyundai Elantra N makes its US debut online with 276 HP

This division’s first hot rod sedan will go well with the Kona N and Veloster N.

Hyundai had larger plans for the debut of its 2022 Elantra N performance sedan. It was to make its first public bow at New York International Auto Show. The automaker decided to launch its latest sporty offering online after the event was cancelled. The Hyundai Elantra N was officially revealed to the US market. It should work well with the Veloster N hatchback and the Kona N crossover.

The Elantra N is powered by a turbocharged 2.0 liter inline four making 276 horsepower (206kW) between 5,500 rpm and 6,000 rpm. For short periods, an “N Grin Shift” overboost function cranks power up to 286 HP (213 kW). The engine produces 289 pound-feet (392 kilowatts) at 2,100 to 4,700 rpm. The engine is responsive and lively, as we saw in the Elantra N’s short prototype drive. There is a slight turbo lag, which adds to driving enjoyment. You can expect a 0-60 time in 5.0 seconds for the eight-speed dual clutch transmission and 5.2 for the six-speed manual.

Engineered Living: Better Living

A number of engineering solutions will be featured in the US-market 2022 HyundaiElantra N to improve its performance and drivability. The vehicle’s dual-compound front suspension insulation and trailing arm bushings keep obstacles from affecting either side. This ensures that performance is consistent even on rough roads. The Elantra N is the first Hyundai vehicle with an integrated drive axle. This technology is based on World Rally Championship race cars and incorporates the front driveshaft and wheel hub as well as a bearing to reduce 3.8 pounds of rotating mass and create a stronger and more robust driveline.

A revised intake tract will bring the N brand’s trademark sharp throttle response to the Elantra. This is what we have seen in the Kona, Veloster and Veloster. Hyundai engineers have reduced the overall weight and pumping losses by combining the intake duct and air filter into one piece. Solid engine mounts, which are specially designed and shaped, will enhance handling by connecting the powertrain and chassis closer together during cornering. A rack-mounted power steering pump ensures that steering inputs are consistent even when handling load increases.

2022 Hyundai Elantra N

Gee-Whiz Technology

The Elantra N is a performance car that must feel special. It has liberally applied red-line accents all over the exterior. The hot sedan is distinguished by its blackened front fascia, which separates it from its smaller siblings. 19-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires also help to distance it. Aerodynamics and appearance are enhanced by a trunk-mounted spoiler, wider underbody, front lip spoiler and rear diffuser. The N-specific sport seats are 10 millimeters lower in the interior. This is due to a flatter profile, which also allows for more rear-seat space.

The Elantra N has many other features that add to the enjoyment. The Elantra N’s N Sound Equalizer creates artificial engine sounds inspired by Hyundai Motors TCR racing cars. It also allows for customization that can enhance three sound profiles: whine and throat. You can also turn it off to hear the engine’s normal sounds. If it’s anything like Kona N’s, it’ll sound hilarious. The Elantra N has a trim-specific skin that allows for additional functionality and drive modes.

What is the best time, where, and how much?

We don’t yet know when the 2022 Hyundai Elantra will arrive, nor how much. It will be available in dealers around October, according to our predictions. The base price for the six-speed manual transmission is $33,000 and the dual-clutch gearbox at $34,500.

The Elantra N will be likely the middle child of the enthusiast-oriented company’s family. It will slot between the $32,500 Veloster, and the unpriced (but most likely $35,000) Kona SUV. The Hyundai N lineup has three stylish, aggressive vehicles that are priced in the mid-$30,000 range. We can’t wait for the Elantra to take a spin and show it off.
