Compass will get a larger size.
The Jeep family continues to grow. Stellantis has added the Grand Cherokee L and Wagoneer to its US portfolio. Now, it is working on a seven-seat crossover for Latin America. It is now officially known as Commander. This is not a new name.
You might remember the Commander (XK) as the midsize, rear-wheel-drive-based boxy SUV sold by Jeep in the US from 2005 until 2010. The Chinese market will instantly think of the FWD-based Commander (XK), a five-seat SUV that was built by Jeep in the US. It was sold alongside a seven-seat Grand Command version (see the photos at the bottom).. The new crossover shown here is based heavily on the Compass but with the addition a third row, after stretching the wheelbase.
The new Commander rides on FCA’s Small Wide platform, which also supports the Renegade. In a teaser video, it shows a more boxy shape than the Compass. The interior is larger than the donor vehicle’s and appears to be a little longer. The less expensive versions will use an FWD system, while the more costly ones will have AWD.
We get the impression that the Commander for Latin America will not be the same design as its Chinese counterpart. The teaser shows that the taillights are different. This suggests that Jeep has taken the time to distinguish the models while keeping the same nameplate.
The Commander for Latin America is due to be revealed soon. A second model will follow the Commander. A tiny subRenegade crossover that primarily targets Europe will be built in Poland starting in November 2022. It will be twinned to Fiat and Alfa Romeo counterparts as part Stellantis’ product explosion.
According to reports, North America may soon get an extended wheelbase Grand Wagoneer by next year. This will allow it to compete with other large SUVs like the Cadillac Escalade ESV or the GMC Yukon XL.
