Turbo models have additional visual modifications to distinguish them from naturally aspirated models.
The Mazda CX-5 2022 made its debut in China a few days ago when images of China’s local version were released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. This was part of the crossover’s homologation process. The North American counterpart is being revealed today. It features essentially the same evolutionary design modifications, which are difficult to notice at first glance.
You’ll notice that each taillight cluster and headlight cluster now has a pair rectangular LED lights. This gives Mazda North America’s most popular vehicle a more attractive look. Zoom-Zoom’s designers also gave the front grille a 3D-like texture. This replaces the mesh design on the 2021 CX-5.
The Grand Touring Reserve model is gone as the 2.5 Turbo model will be replacing it for 2022. Mazda claims that the turbocharged versions of the CX-5 have more styling changes than the CX-5s. The exterior trim pieces are made of glossy black, with red accents and stitching throughout the cabin.
The 2.5 Turbo Signature offers a more refined design, with brightly-colored alloy wheels and body-colored wheel arches. Mazda has included posh materials like Nappa leather and real woodgrain in the interior to make the CX-5 a near-luxury SUV. A new Mi-Drive drive select switch is also available. The seats have been redesigned to provide greater comfort.
The 2022 CX-5 has more features than meets the eyes. It is equipped with a responsive six-speed automatic transmission that delivers smoother acceleration. The compact SUV also features a revised suspension that helps to reduce road noise and vibrations.
All-wheel drive is now standard across the range. Mazda will offer all-wheel drive as standard equipment for all CX models moving forward. Every SUV sold in North America by Mazda will come with an all-paw system, even the entry-level CX-30.
It’s worth noting Mazda has already confirmed the next-generation CX-5 will be an entirely different vehicle by switching to a new rear-wheel-drive-based platform with inline-six engines. Although it is not clear when the new model will be released, it will likely take some time to make its way to the US market as the current model was just updated.
