2022 Mitsubishi Airtrek Electric Crossover Launches with Bold Styling

This compact crossover comes loaded with tech features and has a large wheelbase.

The Airtrek was first shown by Mitsubishi at the Auto Shanghai in April as a named concept. Now, the company will unveil the production version at Auto Guangzhou. The name may sound familiar as the Outlander’s original Japanese version was sold with the same name for several years. The local GAC Mitsubishi Motors joint venture is making it a comeback in China with a new electric vehicle.

The 2022 Airtrek has a split headlight arrangement. The LED daytime running lamps are located at the top of the bumper, while the main cluster of headlights is mounted below. It is shaped like a 7-shaped “7”. This layout is consistent with other recent Mitsu products, and gives the crossover a bold front fascia. The headlights are positioned in the middle of a closed-off grille that has hexagonal indentations and three gray bars. If you look closer, you will see the front camera mounted just below the logo. There is also a large radar sensor lower on the bumper.

Side profile shows a two-tone look for alloy wheels that complement the main white body with a black roof. The 2022 Mitsubishi Airtrek has pop-out doors handles and a large “EV” badge at the front doors. As the images show, the roof has a sunroof and the plastic body cladding around its wheel arches indicates its crossover characteristics.

Looking back at the rear, the taillights remind of a Skoda Karaoq. Mitubishi’s design was likely to mirror the shape of the headlights. On the tailgate, the “EV” logo is again visible. It’s joined by make and model in Chinese. Gray finish continues to the rear of the front grille, where there are three stack reflectors mounted on each side.

In the sense that the touchscreen has taken over most controls, the interior is very simple. The interior also features a large digital instrument cluster and augmented reality tech to aid in navigation. The Airtrek is a compact crossover that’s impressively spacious in the back due to its dedicated electric platform and long wheelbase.

Let’s discuss the specs. Although Mitsubishi’s press release doesn’t give much information, its Chinese website shows that the zero-emissions crossover measures 4630 millimeters (182.3 in) in length, 1920 mm (75.6in) in width, 1728 mm (60.8 in) high, and has a wheelbase of 2830 mm (11.4 in). Airtrek is 1,900 kg (4,189 lb) and comes with a 69.9-kWh pack that provides enough power to drive 520 km (323 miles) on the CLTC cycle. According to local media, the electric motor produces 181 horsepower (135kilowatts).

The 2022 Mitsubishi Airtrek will be available in the People’s Republic starting next year.
