It can reach 62 mph in less than one second, compared to its predecessor.
The unveiling of the new Toyota 86 sports car comes nearly five months after Subaru unveiled its BRZ rear wheel-drive coupe. The original model was sold in excess of 200,000 units. This replacement will bring significant improvements to the vehicle while maintaining the lightweight formula.
The engineers used aluminum roofs and fenders to keep the weight down. They also made tweaks to the front seats, mufflers and exhaust pipes to trim as much fat as possible. Another benefit of the revised roof is its ability to lower the vehicle’s center gravity. This should result in improved handling.
The car’s stability has been enhanced by about 50 percent. However, the car’s footprint remains largely unchanged. It measures 4,265 millimeters (167.9 in) in length, 1,775mm (69.8in) in width, 1,310mm (51.5 in), and has a wheelbase of 2,575mm (101.3 in). The 2022 Toyota 86 weighs in at 1,270 kilograms (2 800 pounds) when equipped with the six-speed manual gearbox. An automatic transmission with the same number gears is also available.
The new 2.4-liter gasoline engine replaces the 2.0-liter unit. This provides more motivation. The horizontally opposed four-banger still produces 232 horsepower (173 Kilowatts) at 7,700 rpm, and 184 pound feet (250 Newton-meters), of torque at 3,700 RPM in the JDM-spec86. Toyota has slashed 1.1 seconds off the sprint to 62 MPH (100 km/h) with its upgraded engine. Now, it takes just 6.3 seconds.
Toyota claims the engine produces more power and offers smooth, stress-free acceleration from low to high revs. The new GR 86 joins the GR Yaris and GR Supra and the GRSuper Sport hypercar. It also features a number of aerodynamic enhancements that improve steering responsiveness and stability. The MacPherson strut is the front suspension, while the double-wishbone rear setup features 18-inch wheels and 215/40 tires on both axles.
The exterior design of the GR 86 and BRZ is almost identical, so it’s easy to see that they are once again twinned. We find Toyota’s front grille to be slightly different. We are noticing that the grille looks similar to the GR Yaris hot-hatch and that the LED headlights on the Subie are different.
It’s also a case o de déjà vu, as the cabin is almost identical to the BRZ sister model. The only differences are the different seat upholstery and GR badge on the steering wheel. The cabin features the same 7-inch digital driver’s screen and 8-inch infotainment. The interiors of the 86 and BRZ are almost identical, from the shape and design of the air vents and the seats to the switchesgear and pedals. Subaru EyeSight Driver Assist Technology is used in the automatic model’s safety.
The second-generation Toyota GR 86 will be available in Japan starting this fall. Details about the North American version will be revealed at a later time.
