2022 will see a brand new body-on-frame fullsize truck.
Although we’ve been discussing the next-generation Tundra for some time, it wasn’t until last month that Toyota released a first official preview of its full-size truck. Although the teaser stated that it would be “coming soon”, we don’t know when Ford F-150’s competitor will be revealed. This is despite having been available for weeks. New renderings have been made available to help ease the wait for the big reveal.
These images were taken by our Russian friends at Kolesa. They are based on Toyota’s teaser image and the most recent spy shots of the new Tundra. The current model is one of the oldest cars on North American roads. Expect significant changes inside and out.
Toyota dealers in the US were invited earlier this year to take a look at the redesigned truck. Let’s just say that they were very excited. Automotive News quoted Robby, Chairman of the Toyota National Dealer Advisory Council as saying, “The new Tundra has been the most exciting thing in the past five-plus years.” We will be the best in class. We’ll have a world-beater and it’s going be great to go toe to toe with the domestic trucks.”
The Tundra’s revamped engine will be upgraded to the TNGA F platform, much in the same way as the next generation Land Cruiser. In an interview with motor trend, Bob Carter, Toyota’s North American Vice-President of Sales, made the announcement earlier this week. The new engine will produce more power and torque than the 381 horsepower (284 kW) or 401 lbft (544 Nm), offered by the naturally-aspirated 5.7-liter V8.
Although he did not reveal the exact numbers, leaked specifications for the LC300 had referred to a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 that produces 409 hp (355 kW) and 480 lb (650 Nm). The new engine will have significantly more power, particularly at low rpms, thanks to turbocharging. It should also be more economically efficient.
Bob Carter also mentioned an optional second powertrain. It is widely believed to be a hybrid. Toyota claims that will blow away with its new technology: “We’ve got our own concept and our own technology. I think you’ll be amazed.” Although the jury isn’t yet out on whether it will become a hybrid or plug-in hybrid vehicle, the electric assistance should provide an increase in power and torque.
The Tundra’s next generation will be revealed in September. Production is expected to begin in November. The all-new body-on-frame, large Toyota truck will be available to dealers by the end of 2021.
