Even the GLI’s fuel economy ratings are now better.
The new Volkswagen Jetta model year 2022 has just been released. It made its debut in the USA in August. This is a mid-cycle refresh, but VW decided to give the compact sedan a slightly larger 1.5-liter engine that was shared with the Taos.
The engine update proved to be beneficial in terms of fuel efficiency. The official fuel economy ratings for the 2022 Jetta have been released by EPA and they look good from all angles. Even more important, the 2.0-liter engine in the Jetta GLI is fuel efficient.
The fuel efficiency ratings for standard models with six-speed manual transmission are 29 mpg in the city, 43 mpg on the highway, and 34 mpg together, according to the EPA. The EPA estimates that S models with an optional eight-speed manual transmission get 31 mpg in the city, 41 mpg on the highway, and 35 mpg when combined. The optional eight-speed automatic transmission is available on SE and SEL models. It has an EPA-estimated rating at 29 mpg, 40 mpg highway and 33 mpg together.
The 2021 Jetta with stick-shift transmission has a EPA-estimated rating at 30 mpg in the city, 41 mpg on the highway and 34 mpg together. Those equipped with AT have a rating of 29 mpg, 39 mpg Highway and 33 mpg respectively.
The Jetta GLI compact sedan with MT is rated at 26 mpg in the city, 37 mpg on the highway and 30 mpg together by the EPA. The optional seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission has an EPA-estimated rating at 26 mpg in the city, 36 mpg on the highway, and 30 mpg when combined.
These numbers are slightly higher than the 2021 ratings which were at 24 mpg City, 33 mpg Highway, and 28 MPG combined for the manual, and at 24 and 35 mpg Highway, respectively, and at 28 mpg combined.
According to the EPA, the 2022 Jetta could save up to $1,500 on fuel over five years compared with the national average new car. Those who opt for the GLI will save as much $500
Both the 2022 VW Jetta model and the GLI version of the GLI are expected to be available in the US within the last three months.
