2022 VW Tiguan debuts with updated exterior and familiar interior

It will be available to US dealers by the end of the third quarter.

Volkswagen launched the second-generation Tiguan in 2017 and quickly became the most popular model in America. The crossover market has become more challenging since then. VW will be giving the model a mid-cycle makeover in 2022. The exterior styling will be updated, while the interior features and amenities of the model will be revised. This is an important segment in which tech is a major differentiator.

The Tiguan will get a new front-end design with the 2022 facelift. This includes a new front bumper that sits below a grille that incorporates an illuminated light line running alongside the VW badge. The rear features are more subtle. The crossover now has its Tiguan lettering, located below the VW logo. R-Line design elements are added to the 2022 Tiguan’s top trims, which include bumpers and side sills.

Standard equipment includes LED headlights, daytime running lights, and LED headlights. Each trim has new wheel options that range in size from 17 to 20 inches. Customers can choose from eight exterior colors, including Oryx White or Kings Red Metallic. Both are new for 2022.

It will be difficult to find any changes within, but VW does occasionally rejigger its technology offerings. The standard VW digital instrument cluster measures 8.0 inches. An optional 10-inch Digital Cockpit Pro is available. All trims include VW’s MIB3 infotainment software, with wireless charging and wireless app-connect for compatible devices. Heated front seats are also standard. Upgrades include heated front seats and a heated steering column.

Climatronic Touch climate control is also available on all trims, except the base. It pairs with the power liftgate. R-Line models get a leather-wrapped steering column. Every trim except the base Tiguan comes with the IQ.Drive suite, which includes blind-spot monitoring and rear traffic alert. It also provides Tiguan forward collision warning, emergency braking with pedestrian detection and rear traffic alert. Lane-keep assistance is available. The base Tiguan also offers rear traffic alert, forward colliding warning, and many other safety features.

The 2022 model will still have the same 2.0-liter four cylinder TSI engine. It generates the same 184 horsepower (137kilowatts) as well as 221 pound-feet (321 Newton-meters of torque), which is transmitted through an 8-speed automatic gearbox. All models come with the optional 4Motion all-wheel driving system. The 2022 VW Tiguan will be available in the US during the third quarter 2021.
