The next-gen hot hatch will continue to stand out from the crowd.
These last few days have been very busy in the Civic type R world. We shared some “spy” photos and then caught video of the car in action with a single janky pipe. Hot Honda enthusiasts, that pipe was only for testing. Another round of Type R spy photos features a red-wrapped prototype, complete with all production components and the triple exhaust finishers at the back.
While Honda only offered two photos, our spy photographer took 14 photographs as the prototype passed. Although we know that the Type R will not be as extravagant as the previous model, these photos give a little more insight into what it means. The front fascia has a large lower intake, flanked by two side intakes. They look aggressive but not too loud. Similar to the current model, we also see rocker trim along the sides with a winglet at the front of the rear wheels.
The rear is where the biggest differences are. The spoiler is big and heavy, but we will have two small side vents that flank the exhaust at the center-exit. This is a far cry of the Type R, which has large vents in the corners and numerous angles.
What’s underneath the skin? Expect to see a modified version of the 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder. It will turn only the front wheels using a six-speed manual. Although a slight increase in power is almost certain, front-wheel drive will continue to be the norm so don’t expect anything more than the Type R’s current 306 horsepower (228 kilowatts).
As a 2023 model, the wrap should be completed next year.
