It is larger in all dimensions than its predecessor.
Two-part car launches have become a tradition at Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis. South Korean brands show off their new shiny products first before they release technical specifications. The second-generation Niro was unveiled in November 2021. Now it is back to reveal the information we have been waiting for. These details will apply to the hybrid model, as the PHEV/EV will be revealed later in the year.
The new Niro is bigger than ever. The electrified crossover measures 4,420 millimeters (173 inches) in length, 1,825mm (71.8in) wide and 1,545mm (60.8in tall), and is 65mm (2.5 in), longer, 20mm (0.8in) wider and 10mm (0.4in) taller then its predecessor. The distance between the axles was increased by 20mm (0.8in), which results in a wheelbase of 2,70mm (107 in).
It has the same drag coefficient of the model it replaces with a Cd value of 0.29. This increases the cabin’s size and provides more practicality. The cargo volume has increased by 15 liters (5.9 cubic feet) to 451 L (451 l). The US model’s cargo capacity will be different as the 451 liters in the European version are measured according to the Verband der Automobilindutrie. The 12V battery, along with the high-voltage batteries, is now located below the rear seats. This allows for more space. It was located within the wheelhouse in the old Niro.
Combining a 1.6-liter engine and an electric motor, the Niro is still able to produce 139 horsepower. The four-pot naturally-aspirated four-pot mill produces 104 horsepower and 144 Newton-meters (106-pound-feet of torque) when it is on its own. It also works with a 32-kilowatt electrical motor. Kia says that the gasoline direct injection engine (GDI), is paired with a six-speed dual-clutch, automatic gearbox that has been “carefully designed and optimized” to improve efficiency and reduce weight.
The new Niro has a Green Zone Drive Mode, which automatically shuts off the combustion engine when it detects a green area. To force the crossover to run entirely on electric power, the driver can also manually set green zones. The battery is fed energy by a regenerative brake system.
The second-generation model has a completely new design and a new suspension and steering, promising a more comfortable ride. The second-gen model also features a more sound-deadening material, which should make the cabin quieter. To complement the 10.25-inch touchscreen, Kia has installed a 10-inch head up display in the interior.
South Korea will begin sales later this month, and global markets will follow in 2022. There are nine colors available, with six contrasting hues to the C-pillar and three for the cladding. The interior has three new shades.
