The Bolt subcompact is the only electric option.
Another sedan death has been recorded in the U.S. market. It’s also a hybrid model. Green Car Reports reports that Chevrolet will drop the Malibu Hybrid in 2020, which the automaker confirmed via email. Chevrolet now offers zero hybrid options with the passing of its sedan. The only option for a bow tie with electrification is the all-electric bolt subcompact.
Sayonara Sedans:
You can guess that the reason is lack of demand. There is no secret that sedan sales have plummeted in North America.
Malibu
The changing tides aren’t going to stop Malibu. Although we don’t have any sales numbers for the hybrid variant of Malibu, overall Malibu sales fell just over 22 percent between 2018 and 2018. It’s not as bad as it sounds.
Cruze
The brand’s flagship dropped nearly 23 percent
Impala
sedan dropped over 25 percent.
The plug-in hybrid Volt saw a 10% drop in 2018 and both of these models were left behind. The Sonic hatchback is still in Chevy’s lineup, despite a 30% drop in sales last year. Although it’s on thin ice don’t be surprised if it goes away.
The Malibu could also be in peril. Rumours suggest that the sedan may be scrapped at the end its current lifecycle which runs through 2024. The mid-size sedan just got a minor facelift in 2019, and its base price of $23,240 makes it a strong contender in the market. Despite the fact that Malibu sales have declined, Chevrolet still sold more than 144,000 units last year. Although the hybrid may be gone, it appears that GM is still trying to keep the Malibu afloat.
Chevrolet is suddenly the only company in this segment, despite automakers making greater efforts to electrify.
