We have spotted the hot hatch in camo, and we are now trying to find out what it was hiding beneath.
Officially Revealed
Sociedad Espanola de Automoviles de Turismo has decided to take Cupra to the next level in terms of high performance offerings. The next generation of this compact sporty will be without the EAT branding and go under the name Cupra Leon. This includes the copper inverted triangle logo that was created for the new subdivision.
At the beginning of June we spotted a prototype of Spain’s sly hatch. Motor1.com’s Artist in Charge of rendering future products now envisions the Honda Civic Type R competitor. The Cupra Leon digital design exercise, which looks as sharp as you would expect a SEAT model, follows the Formentor model . From there the C-segment performance car will adopt the hybrid plug-in powertrain .
Cupra Leon’s switch to a 1.4-liter TSI motor has been confirmed. This engine will be used in conjunction with an electric motor to produce a combined output of up to 245 horsepower.
Our spy cameras caught the Cupra Leon ST with a quad exhaust system, hinting at a possible new R version with all-wheel driving. The wagon’s speed will likely increase the power output to around 300 horsepower. However, the engine identity is unknown. The familiar 2.0 TSI, with or without electrification, is a plausible scenario.
The rendering below shows only the exterior of the Leon in Cupra clothing. Spy shots taken in July allowed us to peek into the regular Leon’s cabin. It features a tablet-style infotainment that sticks out from the center console, much like the mechanically related VW Golf VIII or Skoda Octavia IV.
When can we expect to see it? It is likely that we are at least one year away from seeing the Cupra version of the Leon IV SEAT.
