It even has a working record player…
Although it’s not unusual for a neat-looking Aston Martin DB5 to be sold at a Bond Street Bonhams auction sale, this car has a fascinating backstory.
The original owner of this pristine Aston Martin was ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney. He ordered it right before the band’s 1964 world tour. It arrived with his accountants on September 22, 1964. The Aston Martin even has a record player, presumably to allow him to listen backwards to Revolution 9.
McCartney owned the car six years ago during the height of Beatles’ fame. He was often photographed in the press, gliding around London in his Aston Martin. It was a great addition to McCartney’s appeal as a millionaire rock star and eligible bachelor.
McCartney’s DB5 was a different car back in the day. The original interior and paintwork had started to look a little worn, so the new owner ordered a complete overhaul, including a new paintjob and an upgraded engine. The record player was also restored to its original working condition.
If you feel the Aston is not worth the high price it was sold for, the DB5 has two former celebrity owners. Chris Evans, a television presenter, owned the DB5 for a few years in the mid 2000s as part his extensive car collection. Evans actually bought the car’s personalized number plate.
