Porsche Says 911 SUV Is A Good Idea

Attention purists:

You’re probably familiar with the all new Porsche 911. The revolutionary sports car is making its global debut at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. People are already discussing the future of the 911. Surprisingly, an interview with Autocar India and an executive from Germany suggests an SUV that is based on the sport car. This could be a new evolution or a revolution.

Detlev von Platen, Porsche’s Member of the Executive Board for Sales and Marketing has spoken out to say that it finds the idea of a 911 with high-riding capabilities very interesting. Although there is no indication that talks are underway within Porsche about such a model, it’s possible that the executives will begin to discuss the possibility after the LA show.

Von Platen, Autocar India’s LA representative, stated that the 911 is the core of Porsche design. But taking the 911 and creating an SUV from it? What about making it higher? This could be a great idea. It won’t have a model range, but it will be very limited and niche.

We can’t fault Porsche for trying to make a 911-based SUV. This is the brand that introduced the Cayenne, a performance SUV segment, in 2002. It has been one of Porsche’s most significant models throughout its history. Imagine a 911 Safari-inspired sports utility vehicle with a six cylinder turbocharged engine at its back and all-wheel drive.

If the 911 project is approved for production, it will be the first time Porsche has ever sold a body style other than the two-door coupe.
