The AMG One hypercar’s front fascia design looks great on the next-gen GT.
Mercedes-AMG has not yet finished with the current-generation AMG GT. The best is yet to come from Mercedes-AMG with theBlack Seriesexpected to arrive in 2020. The current model isn’t at its full potential, but the Affalterbach boys and girls may have given us a glimpse of the next-gen car through an official Mercedes video.
YouTubeAbout Lewis Hamilton visiting Sindelfingen’s design center, Germany.
The video shows six-time Formula 1 champion looking at a large-scale model of a two-door coupe with an obvious front design derived from the AMG One hypercar. Although it is too early to tell if the clay model represents a future production model, or a scrapped design, there is a possibility that we are being shown an early glimpse at the next-gen AMG GT.
It won’t be due until at most 2021 so it may seem too early for Mercedesto start the teasing game. Especially since we haven’t seen spy shots of the camouflaged prototype. However, someone asked Mercedes on YouTube if the clay model represents the next GT. Mercedes said that they would have to wait and see, with a winking smile at the end, “We’ll need to see what the future holds for us.” This leaves it open to the possibility that the sleek coupe briefly shown to camera could actually be the new GT. Therefore, we decided to feature the car in this week’s Motor1.com rendering.
Although little information is available about the vehicle, previous reports indicate that the next-gen GT will use the Modular Sports Architecture and the new SL to make economies of scale and accelerate the development process. The AMG-developed Sport Leicht has been seen as a shortened EClass sedan test vehicle, but the only GT prototypes that we have seen recently are the current generation in the Black Series.
This makes sense, as the SL will be replacing an aging model that’s been around for eight years. Rumours claim that the AMG GT will replace S-Class Coupe, while the SL will replace S-Class Convertible. The two S models are allegedly being dropped from the lineup.
We’ll have to wait to see if the clay model will be used in the next GT. But even if it does, we like the direction Mercedes-AMG is going when designing sports cars.
